House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a Congressional delegation from the US have postponed their planned trip to Taiwan after a positive COVID test.
Pelosi tested positive this past week and is currently asymptomatic according to reports. This has been an increasing problem in Washington as the American government has essentially chosen to pretend like the virus doesn’t exist. Unfortunately, it is still killing hundreds if not thousands of Americans every day.
There were also concerns that US President Biden might have also been infected as Pelosi was pictured next to Biden for the signing bill related to the US Postal Service. Of course, no one was wearing a mask. Thankfully for the current American President, it seems he dodged a bullet. Biden’s counterpart in Taiwan is having going through a similar situation now.
President Tsai Ing-wen is currently working from home after having a meal with a relative that later tested positive. Tsai has since tested negative, but will continue to work from home for the time being.
As infections surround both governments, a planned trip to Asia by members of the US Congress has been suspended. If the meeting happens it will be the first time since 1997 that a House Speaker has visited Taiwan. Of course, China had to chime in on this planned trip and make vaguely menacing threats.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian, known conspiracy theorist and lover of adult film stars on Twitter, made obscure threats as usual. He stated that China is against any meeting of officials from Taiwan and America, also stating that America would suffer the consequences of any such action.
What would these consequences be? We don’t know. Zhao might not even know. It was just China’s obligatory threat over a country that has never even been part of the PRC.
These threats are also not likely to make a difference as Taiwan has been making headway improving relations with a number of democratic countries around the world including strengthening ties with the US. In fact, the US just announced another weapons sale to Taiwan in light of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The visit will likely happen at a later date if all parties can stay healthy. China will likely be enraged and can pound sand as usual.
