American is planning to send delegation of national security and defense officials to Taiwan. This announcement came just after Russia invaded Ukraine.
The decision seems to show that the United States is committed to defending Taiwan as Russia violates Ukrainian sovereignty, just as China has promised to do to Taiwan. If China were to attack Taiwan, just as the ongoing Russian invasion in the Ukraine, this would not only be a flagrant violation of international norms, but also a murderous disregard for morals and human life.
It is likely to prevent such senseless violence that Biden is sending these officials (its also likely to protect US interests in Asia, lets be honest). These officials include: former Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Michèle Flournoy, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Michael Mullen, Evan S. Medeiros who was in charge of Taiwan affairs on the National Security Council, Michael Green who also formally worked on the National Security Council, and Professor of the Practice of International Affairs at Harvard Kennedy School Meghan O’Sullivan.
Hopefully some some fruitful discussion can come from these meetings. God willing the unfortunate and murderous actions of the Russian government in Ukraine, and the subsequent reaction from the world gives China pause about its constant threats against Taiwan to do the same.
