Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) has announced that the Sports Administration (體育署) in Taiwan will be looking into an incident surrounding Taiwanese speed skater Huang Yu-ting wearing a Chinese team uniform.
Huang stirred controversy when she a video of her donning a Chinese uniform. Many Taiwanese netizens slammed her, however she fired back claiming essentially that in the sporting world there are no nations. This is sort of true for Taiwan because they have had their nationhood stripped by corrupt international institutions like the IOC. However, sports, including the Olympics obviously, have long been a haven for protest and an outlet for conflicts between nations.
This morning Su stated that athletes that compete for Taiwan have a responsibility to honor the country and protect its dignity. Continuing that he believes that Huang’s actions do not meet this standard and thus the Sports Administration should investigate and take appropriate actions.
Some have pushed back on this investigation saying she should have the right to speak and dress as she pleases. However, many frustrated Taiwanese have cheered on the decision. When decisions are made we will be here to keep you updated on the story.
