South Africa’s deep ethnic and sectarian divides may once again be superseded by the perceived threat of foreigners, many from other Sub-saharan African neighbors, reducing the economic prospects of South Africans.

South Africa’s current unemployment rate stands a 35 percent, with 65% unemployment for youth.

The country has a history of anti-foreigner protests, with flare-ups in 2008, 2015, and 2019, which sadly led to the deaths of 62, 7, and 12 respectively, many of whom were themselves South African.
