Taiwanese Vice President William Lai (賴淸德) had a close encounter of the COVID kind when he attended the inauguration of the new Honduran President, Xiomara Castro, last month.
Lai interacted with King Felipe VI of Spain, after the Spanish royal had already contracted COVID. This has raised concerns with some around Lai’s health and potential infectiousness, being as the Vice President he interacts with some of the most powerful people in Taiwan. However, spokespeople for the Presidential Office have spoken with the media and reassured the public that Lai is in good health and has tested negative for the virus. They also thanked everyone for their concern and said that they will continue to monitor the health of the Vice President.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Taiwanese Ambassador to Spain José María Liu (劉德立) also wished the Spanish King a speedy recovery.
