Fresh polling data out of Kun Shan University (崑山科技大學) shows a high level of support for Tainan mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲).
The polling was conducted by telephone over 4 days (January 13-16). It surveyed adults over 20 years of age with household registration in Tainan. The data was of 1,020 people and has a margin of error of +/-2.99 percent.
The results of the poll showed that 75 percent of residents are satisfied with the mayor’s job so far. The percentage that were unsatisfied didn’t even reach 15 percent, sitting at 14.4 percent. His popularity seems to bridge the political divide as well. 64.9 percent of KMT respondents also signaled that they were satisfied with Huang’s work.
Support for the mayor’s reelection this year is also quite high with 70 percent of those polled saying that they would support him to continue in his current position. This is likely quite positive news for the Mayor and those working with him as local elections, to be held in November of this year, are rapidly approaching. Maintaining this level of satisfaction as mayor during the time of Covid is also not an easy task as many sectors have seen lower economic prosperity as there are far fewer visitors and at times certain activities have been prohibited.
Satisfaction with the local government is also quite high. They captured 70.4 percent satisfaction rates. This again is good news as local elections are coming at the end of the year. These rates are likely connected to the governments handling of the pandemic and local projects like building and maintaining of infrastructure.
Baring something drastic happening over the next few months, it looks like Huang has a pretty clear path to reelection in November.
