Liao Zheng-liang (廖正良) a former New Taipei Legislator, was recently sentenced to 6 years in prison on corruption charges.

Liao was allegedly working with former cop, Zhang Weili (張緯立), who was later absolved of wrong doing by the courts (thought the prosecution has appealed). Zhang reportedly gave Liao NT$300,000 to prevent the demolition of illegal structures in Hsichih District (汐止區) in New Taipei.

Liao contacted the head of the demolition crew himself on at least one occasion to prevent them from doing their duty. This correspondence was after receiving the cash bribe in tea tins according to the prosecution.

Liao has been found guilty of the crime of profiteering and was sentenced to 6 years in prison. He also had NT$300,000 confiscated. The defense still has the ability to appeal the case.
