The US announced it’s 3rd planned weapons sale to Taiwan and Biden is expected to notify Congress sometime next month.

The latest weapons package is related to the Patriot missile systems. It will allow for contractors to visit Taiwan to provide technical assistance and training to the Taiwanese military regarding the system.

The deal is for NT$2.75 billion (US$95 million). This is the lowest in total value of the 3 sales.

This sale comes as the brutal invasion of Ukraine by Russia drags on and every day displays the need for countries threatened by authoritarian states to possess the means to defend themselves. It also shows that, counter to what some had believed, Biden is dedicated to helping Taiwan defend itself.

Such arm sales and cooperation are likely to continue throughout the rest of the Biden presidency.
