In the wake of the belligerent invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Taiwan has donated millions of dollars to help the victims and to help ensure those in the country have a fighting chance.
The Disaster Relief Foundation (賑災基金會), was established in 1990 to help those affected by disasters and coordinate relief and focus resources to get them the help they need. The foundation opened up a special donation fund for assistance to the Ukraine on March 2nd. Soon after, numerous Taiwanese politicians began donating their entire month’s paychecks to Ukraine’s aid. Others such as regular citizens and business and community leaders joined in as well. Over 15,500 donations have already been recorded and by the end of the day on March 3rd the fund already had over NT$79.64 million in it.
The funds will be distributed through Taiwan’s de facto embassy in Poland. This comes on the heels of Taiwan donating 27 tons of medical equipment to assist Ukraine. The foundation has thanked all that have donated and will continue taking donations as the crisis continues.
