1.5 millions heads of livestock have been killed by a drought that threatens the stability of the region. Cereal grain production has also fallen, affecting human food supplies as well.
The drought, affecting Kenya, Somalia and Kenya, the latter of which are facing internal crises, has killed 1.4 million animals in Kenya and 240,000 in Ethiopia.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization is demanding 130 million USD to provide emergency relief in the region, which will be used towards short term food imports for both humans and livestock, and to purchase drought-resistant seeds. The UN claims that 13 million people are facing severe hunger this season.
